1978-1986

Born: January 9, 1956 (Satanta, KS)

College: Kansas State

Drafted: By Chiefs, 1978 / 3rd Rd (58th overall)

Career Highlights:

  • All-time Chiefs leading tackler (999)
  • Chiefs Hall of Fame Inductee, 2003
  • College Football Hall of Fame Inductee, 2003

After his rookie season, when he won a starting job and led the team in tackles, Spani said, “I think I have a long way to go.” A lot of these guys have been around here for a long time and they still learn something every year.” That drive and determination to excel would define the career of the Chiefs’ all-time leading tackler. Drafted in the third round in 1978 out of Kansas State, where he had been a three-time All-Big 8 selection and the school’s first consensus All-American, Spani earned a starting berth in his rookie season, and was a mainstay of the Chiefs defense that helped the team to its first winning season in eight years in 1981, and its first playoff berth in 15 seasons in 1986. Spani retired with 999 career tackles, including five seasons with more than 100.
